Aussies stress over money

MONEY is the number one issue that causes stress in everyday life, according to a national survey.

The national online survey conducted by Newspoll among 1205 Australian adults aged 18-64 asked people for the main things, apart from their job, that make them stressed.

Money problems (including meeting mortgage repayments, paying bills and the cost of living) topped the list of stressors with over half of adults mentioning this without prompting.

This was followed by family and health issues, relationships (non-family), driving in traffic, lack of time, schooling/studying, looking for work and getting the housework done.

Gladstone is an industrial city with thousands of shift workers working 12-hour-days, six days a week.

Adrian McEvoy is a boilermaker working in Gladstone who said he de-stresses by fishing or watching a movie.

“I'm not a very good fisherman, but I like to get out there in my 14ft tinny and just mosey around,” Mr McEvoy said. “Sometimes I catch a fish and sometimes I don't, but it doesn't worry me as long as I'm relaxing and not thinking about work.”

Julia Marshall works in a local retail store and spends the entire day on her feet.

“I get a massage once a month and I buy good shoes which really help my back, but the way I mainly relax is to sit back and read a good book,” Ms Marshall said.
