Monners and family packing bags for Coffs Running Festival
MARATHON legend Steve Moneghetti is on his way back to the Coffs Coast as headline act in the third Bendigo Bank Running Festival on Sunday, September 15.
"Monners" is the event's roving ambassador and will bring his family to the city in the week leading up to soak up our hospitality and take in all that is on offer.
Race director Mick Maley said the former Olympian will be running in the half marathon while his wife and kids are participating as runners and walkers in the other distances.
"All members of the family are encouraged to put on their joggers to join Steve and his kinfolk," he said.
"It's a great event for everybody.
"Last year we had newborn babies being pushed in prams with our oldest competitor, aged 77, running in the half marathon.
"We also had some families with up to six or seven members taking part."
Runners take off from the Coffs Harbour Showground and follow the scenic Coffs Creek Walkway.
There are four distances to choose from with a 3km family fun/walk, a 5km fun run/walk, 10km run/walk and a 21.1km run.
"You certainly don't need to be a champion to enter but you'll feel like one when you finish," Maley said.
Not only is it a fantastic community event, all entrants will be raising money for children in the local area, with proceeds going to the Life Education Van which visits schools in the region, encouraging children to make safe choices for their future.
Healthy Harold was part of the event last year, giving out high-fives and water during the races.
Other local charities benefiting from the Running Festival will be Camp Quality, Coffs Early Childhood Intervention and Coffs Coast Autism.
Representatives from each of these organisations will be playing a very important role at the event, handing out water at the drink stations.
The Rotary Club of Coffs Harbour will be marshalling the course as well as cooking the snags on the barbecue and the St Johns Ambulance team will be on hand to patch blisters and relieve any aches or strains.
