Moore claims final
TENNIS came to Tweed in a big way with the inaugural Tweed Endeavour Cruises Tweed Open Tennis Championships.
More than $3000 in prize money attracted 83 players from nearby and as far as Sydney and Melbourne for the three-day competition which wound up at Arkinstall Park, Tweed Heads South yesterday.
Favourite and top seed, Brendan Moore of Lismore took the men’s open singles against Marsden’s Josh Barrenechea, posting an impressive 6-4, 1-6, 6-2 victory.
Barrenechea played a convincing second set and showed why the 19-year-old was seeded number two for the event which attracted a hot field.
The women’s singles provided, perhaps, the biggest surprise of the tournament in the form of the unseeded Brisbane player, Maika Tanpoco reaching the final.
She then faced No.1 seed, Chloe Lowe in an exciting game in which Tanpoco won in straight sets, 6-1, 6-1.
Brendan Moore paired up with his brother, Nathan, in the men’s open doubles against Barrenechea and Justin Seller to grasp an outstanding straight-sets victory.
The Lismore brothers gave their opponents no room to breathe and won the first set 6-0 and the second set 6-1.
The under-18 girl’s singles was less clear-cut as No.2 seed, Taylah Beckman of Grafton, won the title after a three-set battle against Gosford’s Rebecca Stewart.
At only 14 years of age, Beckman outlasted the top seed and won the match 6-2, 3-6, 6-4.
The under-18 boy’s singles was an all-Gold Coast affair in which the No.2 seed Nicolas Cameron was triumphant over the favourite Justin Seller.
In cruise mode virtually from the outset, Cameron took the game from Seller in straight sets, 6-1, 6-1.
In the men’s special singles, Gold Coast’s Juan Langton took the title with a 7-6, 6-2 win over Toowoomba’s Maddison Simmons.
In the men’s consolation final, Brisbane’s John Peacey beat Jordan Marshall (Gold Coast) 7-5, 6-2.
