More evacuations for shire

THE SES has ordered the evacuation of all residents in South Murwillumbah, Condong and Tumbulgum following more than 500mm of rainfall across the Tweed shire in the past three days.

The Tweed River is expected to exceed the major flood level of 4.8m around 6pm and then 5.2m at 8pm.

The river is expected to reach 2m at Chinderah about midnight.

Fingal Head and areas of Chinderah began evacuating earlier today.

Evacuation centres have been set up at Sacred Heart Catholic Hall on Murwillumbah St, Murwillumbah and at Kingscliff TAFE on Cudgen Rd, Kingscliff.

The SES is urging people in these areas to evacuate immediately.

Delaying evacuation can cause road congestion and lead to people becoming trapped and needing rescue.

As you evacuate you should:

- Take your important documents, mementos and photos

- Take your spare clothing and medicines

- If going to an evacuation centre take sleeping bags, pillows and blankets

- If possible, check to see if your neighbours need help

- Turn off the electricity and gas

- Don't walk ride or drive through floodwater

- Continue to listen to a local radio station for updates

For emergency assistance telephone the SES on 132 500.
