More high-octane, adrenalin pumping sport
IF you want to see more adrenalin pumping sporting action on the Tweed, Sports Marketing Australia senior analyst Trevor McGaw is your main man.
Mr McGraw is teaming up with Destination Tweed to host workshops for local sporting associations, to help attract more high-octane events to the region.
Representatives from key sports clubs are also meeting one-on-one with Mr McGraw to find out whether they can assist with certain events.
"What we do as a company, we work with national and state music promoters, sports promoters and action sport's promoters," Mr McGraw said.
"We speak with the local organisations on the ground to assist the event owners.
"Feet on the ground in the local area."
Mr McGraw said that more sporting events and the resulting tourists would be an asset to the Tweed economy.
"If you look at the research that has been done, sports tourists spend $232 a day, versus $163 a day for leisure tourists," he said.
"If you put 1000 people in the region for five days that's close to a million dollars to the Tweed economy."
Mr McGraw said that local sporting organisations could benefit greatly from assistance provided.
"There is a significant potential benefit for local sports clubs to generate cash flow by, say, offering their club premises as the host venue and providing members to serve as volunteers," he said.
"For instance, through catering, beverage sales and fund-raising activities, the host venue of an event could boost their coffers by up to $30,000 in just one weekend."
Destination Tweed is developing a Capacity and Capability Assessment, which Mr McGraw promises will be an invaluable marketing tool for attracting sporting team visitation in the lead-up to the events such as the 2018 Gold Coast Commonwealth Games.
