Vintage bike enthusiast killed on leisure ride

A MOTORCYCLIST has died during a vintage bike leisure ride with friends after being hit by an overtaking four-wheel drive on the Burnett Highway west of Gympie.

The Maryborough man, aged in his 50s, was part of a group of 12 vintage motorbike enthusiasts from across southeast Queensland who were travelling to an event in Kilkivan when the incident occurred at Goomeri at 11.30am on Sunday, police said.

A Queensland Police Service spokesman said it appeared the man had been riding at the front of the group when he slowed down to turn on to Boonah Rd and was struck by the four-wheel drive which had been travelling behind.

The driver is assisting police with inquiries.

It's the 30th reported motorcyclist death on Queensland roads this year so far, with a total of 153 deaths recorded in road accidents.

The tragedy was followed by another motorcycle incident further south on Sunday.

Two people were in a serious condition on Sunday night after a car crossed to the wrong side of the road on the Bruce Hwy at Bald Hills and ploughed into several cars and a motorbike just after 3pm.

The motorcyclist, a 71-year-old man, was taken to the Royal Brisbane and Women's Hospital with serious injuries, along with another driver, 37.

A child was among the others taken to hospital with more minor injuries, a Queensland Ambulance Service spokeswoman said.

Motorists were stuck in bumper to bumper traffic while crew worked to clear the extensive crash site.

Diversions were in place but progress was slow-going with drivers told to avoid travel if possible before the congestion was finally cleared about 6.30pm.

Police are seeking motorists with dash cam footage who may have seen the accident or what happened beforehand to come forward.
