Motoring world unveils new delights at Aus International

SALES of new cars are likely to surpass the one million mark this year, but celebrations are low-key in the motoring fraternity.

During Thursday's launch of Australian International Motor Show at Sydney there was an absence of the traditional glitz and glamour.

Toyota stole the show with its soon-to-be-released, 11th-generation Corolla, accompanied by a dancing troupe which took showgoers on a trip down memory lane and 45 years of the nameplate Down Under.

Nissan's luxury arm, Infiniti, captivated plenty of attention with members of Cirque du Soleil strutting their stuff before unveiling a new G37 coupe and convertible.

Pointing to tight economic times, most manufacturers forgot the gimmicks and instead let their cars do the talking.

Mercedes-Benz garnered plenty of attention with its A-Class starting from an extremely sharp $35,600, while Honda's new CR-V for $27,490 is sure to inspire plenty of showroom interest, as will Mazda's sportier CX-9 large sports utility vehicle.

As for the glamour, it was hard to beat the breathtaking $1.85 million Aston Martin One-77 coupe, or the Lamborghini line-up of the grey left-hand-drive Aventador LP700-4 and Gallardo LP570-4 Spyder Performante and Jaguar's beautiful new F-Type convertible.

The raging bull also showcased its Sesto Elemento concept car - a 999kg terror with a 419kW V10 engine that can spear it from 0-100kmh in just 2.5 seconds.
