Movie review: G.I. Joe Retaliation

TO say that G.I. Joe Retaliation kicks the butt of the first offering, The Rise of Cobra is not saying much at all.

The first film in the franchise received the almost unanimous panning and derision critics usually reserved for a dodgy Adam Sandler film but the second time around they have gathered all the right ingredients for a fun and cheesy action flick.

It is the film the first one should have been.

A pure shot of childish testosterone packaged in explosions and delivered by some tough, beefy action stars accompanied by a token hot chick.

Since the first film was so ill received there is little surprise that all but a few characters have been retained this time around and helps to establish this as its own film.

The plot is fairly stock standard, baddies make their move and wipe out all but three of the US Army's special forces known as G.I. Joes, leaving the remaining troops led by Dwayne 'The Rock' Johnson to put a stop their plans of global domination.

The term 'franchise Viagra' has been thrown around where The Rock is concerned.

He's become known for juicing up a sequel and has sparked new creative life into both Fast & Furious 5 and Journey 2: The Mysterious Island and here is injection has a similar effect.

The action sequences are well executed and the flying mountainside fight is almost balletic in it's presentation.

The film exceeds when you accept it for just what it is; a big, dumb, action film where everything is done in grandiose excess and there is a heavy hand of clichés.

But let's face it, it's a film about an action figure for young boys, you can't expect much more than child's play and it's a whole lot of fun letting your inner child out for a trip to the movies.
