MOVIE REVIEW: Now You See Me 2

A HEIST movie with magicians is about as good an elevator pitch as you could ask for and therefore it wasn't too surprising when 2013's Now You See Me grossed over 300 million dollars worldwide.

Of course, in the modern Hollywood, any successful movie has to be milked dry, leading to the second (but probably not last) chapter in the franchise, Now You See Me 2.

The story picks up with the Four Horsemen re-emerging after a year in hiding, determined to continue their quest of exposing corrupt, corporate figures to the public.

However, their return stunt is hijacked by a new, powerful enemy who blackmails the Horsemen into performing a dangerous heist for their freedom.

As with any sequel, the stakes and scale rise accordingly with the budget, taking an already over the top, sort of ridiculous idea and somehow pushing it even further.

It definitely has its moments, mixing magic with espionage is still a unique enough idea to guarantee some really fun scenes, but the longer the story plays out, the clearer it becomes just how absurd the whole thing is.

It's obvious that a film about magicians would try to manipulate the narrative to keep the audience surprised, but Now You See Me 2 has so little to work with that the more you think about it, the more nonsensical the plot twists become.
