MP fights for bus upgrades
TWEED MP Geoff Provest has put public transport on the agenda again this week announcing almost $10,000 to improve transport information.
The funding from Transport for NSW will go towards the Tweed Shire Best Practice Passenger Timetable and Bus Stop Network Map servicing areas around Tweed Heads, Pottsville and Murwillumbah to help people better access Tweed bus services.
Mr Provest said this funding should "get the ball rolling" for improvements to public transport across the Tweed.
Although he made no mention of an upgrade in bus services across the shire, he announced he was working on resolving specific issues with Currumbin Special School and Kingscliff TAFE.
Currently, students at the Currumbin Special School that live in NSW have no access to free cross-border transport to allow them to travel to and from school.
"We're looking to get free travel for students across the border," Mr Provest said.
"Everyone I've mentioned it to believes it's a bureaucratic decision that can be easily overcome when the right people are notified."
Mr Provest also announced he was hoping to solve the tricky issue surrounding a bus stop at Kingscliff TAFE.
The bus is not allowed to enter TAFE premises forcing it to stop outside the gates.
Limited pedestrian access means people using walkers, wheelchairs or scooters must juggle the busy road outside the TAFE to get inside.
"Disabled people are being dropped off out the front," Mr Provest said.
"That road is pretty busy and there's a lot of vehicle movement."
Mr Provest said he was negotiating with TAFE and Transit Australia Group to find a safer solution.
