MP rejects Lakes Drive Bridge

TWEED MP Geoff Provest has announced he will not support a Lakes Dr bridge but said he would investigate alternatives to the upgrade of Kennedy Dr.

Traffic congestion on Kennedy Dr has led to proposed upgrades of both Kennedy Dr and Kirkwood Rd, but the Bilambil Heights Development Group has insisted a bridge connecting Lakes Dr to Kirkwood Rd would be a better solution.

Mr Provest said he would not support the bridge proposal, which was also rejected by Tweed Shire Council.

He wants money invested in investigating alternative routes because he says, “I don't see how we can upgrade Kennedy Dr much more”.

“At this stage I would not be in favour of a Lakes Dr Bridge.”

The bridge was first proposed in the mid-1990s and raised fiery discussion.

“There were two major reasons for the debate. Firstly, the residents in the area didn't want it and it would also have significant cost as it was deemed a local road and would therefore be funded by council,” Mr Provest said.

“I'm leaning towards other proposals. There has to be fair-dinkum local community consultation.”

Mr Provest suggested a road from Boyds Bay Nursery cutting through to the Cobaki Lakes Parkway to alleviate congestion.
