Public asked to help investigate MP travel entitlements

THE PUBLIC is being asked for input into a potential national audit investigation of MPs travel entitlements.

After a series of revelations about the administration of MPs' travel entitlements, the Australian National Audit Office is investigating the issue.

On Thursday, it announced via Twitter the audit, which will examine the effectiveness of the Department of Finance's administration of politician's entitlements.

While the investigation has been labelled a "potential audit", lingering questions remain over whether the department was appropriately managing the entitlement program.

A number of politicians in recent months have been exposed as using the entitlements to attend social functions including weddings and sports events.

It will also look into how successful the 2009-10 audit of the scheme was, and whether any of the Auditor-General's recommendations were taken on by the government.
