Mt Everest Tragedy: Maria's body retrieved from Everest

AUTHORITIES say a rescue helicopter has brought the body of the Australian climber, Maria Strydom, from Mount Everest to Kathmandu.

She died from altitude sickness on the world's tallest mountain a week ago.

The 34-year-old was nearing the summit when she fell ill.

Dr Strydom's husband Robert Gropel, who was part of the trek and also suffered altitude sickness, was airlifted to Kathmandu earlier this week.

He had vowed not to leave Nepal before his wife's body could be recovered.
