Mt Warning track closed for repair

THE walking track up Mt Warning is to be temporarily closed from next Tuesday while workers using a helicopter begin repairs.

National Parks and Wildlife Service Tweed area manager, Damien Hofmeyer, said the Summit Track in Wollumbin Mount Warning National Park will be temporarily closed to visitors until Friday, May 13 to allow for the helicopter operations.

Mr Hofmeyer said the planned program would involve lifting in track materials and emergency equipment.

“The loads are carried below the helicopter by long slings and for the safety of visitors the Summit Track needs to be closed during the operations,” he said.

“The program is planned for Tuesday, however it may need to be rescheduled for following days if the weather conditions are not favourable.

“Road base has been loaded into specially designed lift bags with each bag weighing around 400 kilograms.

“Additional loads include replacement signs for the summit and an emergency stretcher to evacuate injured walkers.

Mr Hofmeyer said staff were monitoring weather forecasts and are hoping for clear skies on Tuesday.
