Mud makes for a slippery exit to Splendour

IT WOULDN'T feel like Splendour in the Grass without a downpour, and Sunday night delivered, in bucket loads.

The final night of the three day event saw the not so mystery band, Alt-j pull out all the crowd pleasers.

"This gig was meant to be a secret but I guess word got out," Alt-j frontman Joe Newman told the packed crowd in the Supertop.

Adding to the squeeze, a 10 minute downpour left punters scrambling for shelter.

The Leeds band, who were in the country six months ago, kept the crowd dry with songs from their debut album An Awesome Wave including crowd favourites, Tessellate, Breezeblocks, the bass heavy Fitzpleasure as well as their triple j like a version of Kylie Minogue's, Slow.

Earlier New Zealand songstress Lorde managed to pull a larger crowd than Aussie favourites, The Rubens who followed on the Supertop stage.

Her singles Royals and Tennis Court were clear stand-outs from the artist who was only placed on the bill after Frank Ocean's cancellation.

While James Blake and Laura Marling drew smaller crowds at the Mix-Up and GW McLennan tents it was Icelandic band, Of Monsters And Men who were tasked with the closing set at the Supertop.

Strangely, Frank Ocean seemed a topic lost in the mud of Saturday as punters praised the indie-folk before them.

King And Lionheart, Mountain Sound and Little Talks from their debut album, My Head Is An Animal gave punters one last chance to dance, and where better than in the rain.
