Mum welcomes decision to keep Mur'bah Hospital ward open
MUMS have felt some relief after the announcement the Murwillumbah Hospital children's ward would remain open.
Rebecca Blakeney was at the forefront of the campaign to save the ward.
She hasn't considered the weekend closures a complete defeat.
"I definitely consider it a win, for now," Ms Blakeney said.
"It's still open; we have to be grateful for that."
Ms Blakeney said it was a relief to see the ward avoid complete closure.
"As a community we still need to be vigilant and keep it in our minds that it may be looked at again in the future," she said.
"I think they genuinely are trying to make a compromise."
Ms Blakeney acknowledged there was still a cloud of doubt regarding the ward's long-term future.
"All we can do is keep on fighting for it," she said.
She said local doctors had been integral in keeping the ward open.
Lismore Labor candidate Isaac Smith slammed the decision, claiming locals deserved better.
"Nationals MP Thomas George must guarantee that this is a permanent decision, not just a bluff to tide him over until election day next March," Mr Smith said.
Meanwhile, Thomas George, whose electorate covers Murwillumbah, said he was pleased with the Local Health Board's decision, which was exclusively revealed in the Tweed Daily News last Saturday..
"This is great news for the Murwillumbah and surrounds community."
