MUMS' TOP 5: Ways to reward a well-behaved child

AS A parent, it can be hard to balance the good with the bad, but it is vital not to forget about positive reinforcement.

While you may spend all your time running around after a naughty child, giving them attention, the good kids deserve your time and energy too. Just as the naughty child needs acknowledgement for doing the right thing.

Woodford mum of two Katie Dykes said her secret to rewarding her children was "finding their love language".

"Find the things they love, and use that because every child is different," she said.

"Some like to be given things, some just want a hug, so find out what gives them that validation.

"For my eldest, ice cream, chocolate and little surprises work. But for my youngest, time in my arms is all she wants."

Ipswich mum of four Meltopia Grandelis said she used to reward her kids with food - ice cream or treats - but since turning their diet around, uses a different approach.

"I don't want ice cream", said no child ever. Alliance

"Now we order book club as a reward because it's educational, they love it, and it's good for them," she said.

Sunshine Coast mum of two Deanne Stock said the element of surprise always a winner in her household.

"If it's something really good, I try to do random things like pick them up from school at lunch time and say right, we're going to the movies," Deanne said.

Here are five ways to reward a well-behaved child

1.       Praise. Nothing works better or is more effective.

2.       Give them something they have earned. This might be a toy, more time on their favourite game, a friend sleep over etc.

3.       Affection and attention. Sometimes it just takes a hug. Other times, giving them your undivided attention playing footy in the backyard or playing with their dolls is the best medicine.

4.       Food. "I don't want ice cream", said no child ever.

5.       One-on-one time. Whether it's a girlie day with mum, or boys day out fishing, some quality one-on-one time is magical for children.
