Murwillumbah Bowls Club could become a supermarket?

THE Murwillumbah Bowls Club which closed in June last year, may be re-developed into a supermarket.

It comes after repeated failed attempts to find a location for a second major supermarket in the town over many years.

That is despite the major supermarket retailers regularly contacting Tweed Shire Council seeking advice on a range of localities.

It's an idea contained in this month's council agenda, but it's taken the Murwillumbah Service Club which owns the Condong St site by surprise.

"The club has made no decision on the site at all," CEO Guy Diven said.

"We will look at all the options but we won't commit to any idea at this stage.

Council staff are recommending the preparation of a planning proposal for the site and any changes to the Development Control Plan be undertaken to accommodate the supermarket.

But they are also open to other possibilities for the land which is currently zoned recreational and residential.
