Murder suspects facing extradition

POLICE will extradite a couple from Victoria over the suspected murder of a man last seen in Chinderah.

The couple, a 42-year-old man and a 22-year-old woman appeared before Melbourne Magistrate's Court on Tuesday for an unrelated matter.

The man had been charged with murder, while the woman had been charged with accessory after the fact to murder and are expected to be extradited to Sydney.

The investigations relate to the alleged suspected murder of 47-year-old Saaid Zaiter, who was last seen in Chinderah on Tuesday, December 16, last year.

New South Wales Homicide Squad detectives travelled to Melbourne on Monday as part of investigations into the case.

The extradition follows extensive investigations by Strike Force Rohan, comprising detectives from the State Crime Command's Homicide Squad, with assistance from the Richmond and Tweed/ Byron Local Area Commands.

A NSW police spokeswoman yesterday said Mr Zaiter was not a Chinderah resident.

“He was just visiting,” the spokeswoman said.

A burnt-out car discovered in Barkers Vale on the same day is also being investigated in relation to the crime.

The destroyed silver Land Rover Discovery sparked a massive search last year after it was found at a gravel pit besides the Kyogle to Murwillumbah Road.

According to The Northern Star, police said in December the Land Rover had been registered to a local person.

Investigations are ongoing.
