Murwillumbah Cup fever off and racing

ALL eyes will turn to the little track among the canefields Sunday week, as the 2016 Murwillumbah Cup Carnival gets under way with the running of the 1800m Murwillumbah Cup Prelude.

The winner of the event will secure a berth for the $33,250 main event at the end of June.

Nominations for the full seven-race TAB meeting close on Tuesday with the Trainers Service Centre.

This year’s P Smith & Son Real Estate Murwillumbah Cup is already promising to be an interesting affair.

Last year’s champ is the locally trained Bernie Of Babylon – an automatic qualifier – who recently put in another sound effort on his home track when taking out the 1530m Mt Warning Open Handicap in his trademark style of leading from go-to-whoa.

The upcoming Murwillumbah Cup Prelude will be followed a week later by another qualifying event, the 1900m Murwillumbah Cup Preview, which tradition dictates is run at Ballina.

This year will also see the return of the Tweed River Jockey Club’s famous Murwillumbah Cup Calcutta, after a five-year hiatus.

The Calcutta will be the highlight of a special luncheon to be held on Friday, June 24 at the Riverview Hotel Murwillumbah, hosted by turf legend Mal Johnston and Greg Ritchie.

Bookings for the $100 affair are essential and filling up fast. Contact TRJC secretary-manager Brian Charman on 0266723672 to reserve a seat.

At Murwillumbah’s most recent meeting earlier in the month, the Bryan Guy-trained Biagiotti took out the 1530m Mooball Cup.

Apprentice Brooke Ainsworth took the three-year-old filly straight to the front, showing her rivals a clean pair of heels, kicking clear with a furlong to go on to win comfortably by a length.
