Arrest after machete attacks near Murwillumbah

A MAN has been charged after he allegedly attacked two men with a machete during separate incidents, earlier this week.

About 3:30pm on Wednesday July 2, a 50-year-old man attended his neighbours' house in Pumpenbil near Murwillumbah and allegedly assaulted the 64-year-old man.

During the incident he allegedly grabbed the man by the throat and threatened him with a machete before leaving the property.

The 64-year-old man sustained a throat injury and attended Murwillumbah Hospital where he was admitted overnight for treatment.

Three hours later at 6pm on Wednesday July 2, the 50-year-old man allegedly became involved in a road rage incident on Tyalgum Road at Eungella, where he followed and confronted a 76-year-old man.

During the incident he allegedly grabbed the elderly man by the throat and threatened him with the machete.

It is further alleged he swung the machete at his car and damaged the bull bar of the vehicle before fleeing the scene.

As a result of the incident, the 76-year-old man sustained a small laceration to his face.

Detectives from Tweed-Byron Local Area Command commenced investigations into the assaults and yesterday attended a house in Pumpenbil where they conducted a search warrant seizing a machete and clothing.

A 50-year-old man was arrested at the premises and taken to Tweed Heads Police Station where he was charged with being armed with intent, reckless wounding, assault occasioning actual bodily harm, intimidation, malicious damage and possess prohibited drug.

He was refused bail and appeared in Tweed Heads Local Court on Friday.
