Music in the streets

TYALGUM Music Festival will take to the streets to make next weekend's event an all-inclusive musical affair.

Co-creative director and violinist Anna McMichael said the musical talent wouldn't be confined to the community hall during the annual event, as it had been in previous years.

Ms McMichael said there would be streetside performances from lunch onwards over the weekend with a pop-up market being held on on Sunday.

She had high hopes that bringing parts of the festival outdoors would help to engage more people, including younger generations.

"I think it's really important, especially with a festival. It generates a feeling that it's for everyone," she said.

Ms McMichael said tickets were being sold online and through 4MBS Classic FM for the first time.

As of midway through this week, she said up to 70 tickets for each show had been sold - a boost on previous years.

"Every concert seems to be doing quite well," she said.

"Each year there seems to be an influx of tickets sales at the last minute.

"I hope everyone comes and finds a concert they enjoy."

For Tomewin-based pianist Crystal Smith, performing as part of the Bright Sparks program would be just another opportunity to get on stage.

The 16-year-old said Bright Sparks would see a handful of tal-ented young musicians perform solo.

"It's really inspiring to see so many musicians and see how they play," Crystal said.

She said it was a great idea to expand the festival out into the village.

"It'll make it more accessible to people passing through," she said.
