My Kitchen Rules returns with plenty of drama, and cheese

'TEAM cheese' Annie and Jason got My Kitchen Rules off to a wholesome start tonight.

The cheese-loving couple from the Hunter Valley was selected as the first team to cook in the show's fifth season debut.

The newlyweds impressed judges Pete Evans and Manu Feildel with their "humble, honest" food.

"I think you've started this competition off with a bang," Evans said.

"I really, really enjoyed this entrée. It wasn't fancy; it was honest; it was humble. There were a few ingredients on the plate that really shone."

Their rare fillet steak was savoured by the judges, who both gave it a score of nine out of 10, but not by all of the other teams.

Despite a drama with sourcing enough Labneh cheese from Jason's family cheese shop, their dessert was labeled a "good cheesecake".

So what did we learn about the first look at the other teams?

We found out "awesome" Andrew is a graphic designer and poet/all-round creative guy.

He earned his nickname "awkward Andrew" early on in the meal by spilling a glass of wine and attempting to milk a fake cow.

And his new girlfriend Emelia "love, love, loves" living in Canberra. They're the show's first-ever team from the ACT.

Melbourne's identical twin sisters Helena and Vikki apparently want to build their own Greek food empire, having already laid the groundwork with their sweets stall at the North Melbourne Markets.

Grandparents and longtime married couple Deb and Rick, from South Australia, seemed harmless enough but "cougar" Deb soon had the judges blushing with her tableside flirting.

Perth friends Chloe and Kelly are posh, fine-dining loving girls who have eaten their way around the world thanks to their well-paying oil and gas industry jobs.

A quick rivalry appears to be forming between Chloe and Kelly and Helena and Vikki.

Tomorrow night, Andrew and Emelia will host their instant restaurant in Canberra.

 

Annie and Jason's Instant Restaurant Menu:

Entrée - Goat's cheese croquets with rock and apple salad and caramelized macadamias

Main - Fillet steak with sweet potato puree, polenta crusted onion rings and blue cheese sauce

Dessert - Raspberry and white chocolate cheesecake with chocolate shards
