Battle of the beards not just about facial fuzz length

THEY say size isn't everything.

Turns out that goes for beards as well.

An impressive length of facial hair isn't enough to claim the championship title at a beard competition these days.

You can't rely on aids such as gels or wax products, either. It's about the mass, density, shape, colour and overall impression.

A tall order, but Nathen Coles thinks he has what it takes to bring home the gold.

Mr Coles, who started the Bearded Men of the SC Facebook page earlier this year, is going into his first beard competition this week after nearly three years of growing his whiskers.

He will take part in the inaugural Beardmeister competition at the Oktoberfest Brisbane on Friday night.

Organised by the Beard Alliance's Gold Coast Facial Hair Club, the competition follows a long tradition of beard and moustache appreciation and rivalry in Germany and the European alpine regions.

Brisbane competition categories include natural moustache, natural full beard and freestyle.

Each category is to be judged by beard and moustache connoisseurs from the Gold Coast Facial Hair Club.

"It's more than just growing your beard," Mr Coles said. "It's about how you care for it, using the right oils and conditioner and keeping it brushed.''

Mr Coles said a certain level of respect was afforded someone with a three-year-old beard. "A lot of work is put into it," he said.
