Nationals leader visits Tweed

FEDERAL Nationals leader Warren Truss pulled no punches when he visited the Tweed on  Monday.

He joined the rest of the Nationals' parliamentary team on a two-day blitz of the Richmond and Page districts, starting with a party room meeting in Tweed Heads then taking to the road through both electorates.

"The aim of the visit is to talk to locals about local issues," he said.

"But we are especially focusing on the carbon tax and its impact on businesses. under the tax.

"The implications are that our products will be more expensive, while imports will be cheaper.

"We stand to see the loss of hundreds of thousands of jobs.

"We are already seeing this start to happen."

Mr Truss said Tweed businesses would suffer through electricity hikes that would impact on lighting and running costs.

"The impact of the carbon tax will be passed on to ordinary Australians," he said.

Mr Truss said pensioners would be receiving a one-off payment to compensate for the impact.

"But the carbon tax is here forever," he said.

"There won't be another one-off payment.

"Getting rid of the carbon tax is top of the agenda.

"We care greatly about the environment.

"But the carbon tax will do nothing for climate change.

"With a positive agenda, we will find things that will actually work through environmental projects rather than through a massive tax.

"We are going to work hard to win in the Richmond region.

"It's a priority seat.

"We want a lot of things to change and to change fast."
