Nature gives Tweed coffee farm a blanket of 'snow'
IT snowed in Tweed this week - well almost.
Coffee trees at Zeta's Coffee in Carool were covered in a white blanket of blooms yesterday.
The spectacular sight of the Arabica coffee tree flowers lasts just a couple of days and will be just a memory come tomorrow.
"It only lasts about two days," manager Zeta Grealy said.
"But it's just such a lovely thing to see."
The pretty flowers smell like orange blossom and are reminiscent of the cherry blossom flower.
Since 1994 the coffee business manager has watched the crop survive through storms and sunshine.
Mrs Grealy said all the flowers blooming at once was a rare occurrence and a pretty sight.
"When we have a dry spell and then a good dropping of rain like we had here 10 days ago it makes for a much better flower," she said.
"In the past few years it has been patchy but it's great to see it like this, this year."
The flower will soon bud and from the bud a cherry will grow.
Mrs Grealy said the cherry would mature and eventually will be hand picked, skinned and de-pulped to reveal two coffee beans which will then wait in storage to be roasted.
