Near air collision investigated

THE Australian Transport Safety Bureau has launched an investigation into a near air collision that occurred over the Gold Coast Airport last month.

A Qantas Boeing 737-838 and a Virgin Australia 737-8FE were both flying from Melbourne en route to Brisbane when the incident occurred.

The passenger jets were in a holding pattern about 28 km west-south-west of the Gold Coast in accordance with  prior instructions from air traffic control.

The radar separation standard of 9km between the two aircrafts was then infringed.

The Australian Safety Transport Bureau said the extent of the infringement was yet to be confirmed and the investigation is ongoing.
