Needles spoil the fun at Tweed skate park
A MUM is fuming after taking her kids to a skate park to have some innocent fun only to discover a heap of dirty needles on the ground.
Jacki Burton made contact with the Tweed Daily News after the find hoping to shine a light on the issue.
She said her friend took her two children to Tweed Heads South skate park last month to use scooters they got for gifts and were shocked at the dangerous state of the place.
"(It) was full of dirty syringes,” Ms Burton said. "(It was) absolutely disgusting.”
Her friend filmed a video and took photos that she posted to Facebook to warn others.
Tweed council was contacted and told of the issue. It asked people to report dumped sharps to NSW Health Needle Clean-up Hotline on 1800 633 353.
It said residents could put needles in a plastic container with a secured lid and get rid of them in the red rubbish bins.
There are needle exchanges, syringe vending machines and sharps bins at Tweed Heads Community Health Centre and Murwillumbah's Centrelink building, and a needle exchange at the Day and Night Chemist off Kennedy Dr, Tweed Heads West.
