Neighbour recalls horror crash

THE scene at the site of the crash belies the horror that took place 10 years ago.

It is calm and peaceful.

Water hens swim quietly or rest along the shore of Ululah Lagoon while people walk nearby.

A cross dedicated to Kristina's memory has been placed under a tree.

It reads: In loving memory, Kristina Ann Tynan.

The dates inscribed in the cross hint at everything Kristina never got a chance to do:

Get married, have children of her own.

Turn 21.

A woman walking her dogs nearby says she remembers the night of the crash. She lives on Ann St.

Another neighbour, who asked not to be named, said Kristina's father knocked on his door a few days after the crash, needing to know what had happened to his child.

"He was a big man and he just looked broken," he said.

"I could understand that big, broken man coming to my fence to ask if I'd seen anything.

"He was shaking. It was anger and it was grief."

Having two daughters of his own, the man said he could only imagine what Kristina's father was going through.

The night of the crash, the man was woken by his dogs barking.

"We had done Relay for Life the night before.

"We went to bed, we were stuffed. Then the dogs went off.

"I thought someone was coming through the front door."

Having looked around and failing to see anything out of the ordinary, he went back to bed but was awoken again when the flashing lights of emergency vehicles shone into his bedroom window.

"The car was upside down near the fountain and a police officer was near the car, wringing wet," he said.

"There were investigators all over the place the next day."
