Sombre New Year for family as Peter Greste awaits appeal

IT WAS a nervous New Year's Day for Peter Greste's family and friends as they waited for the jailed journalist's appeal.

An Egyptian court was yesterday preparing to review the convictions of the Australian reporter and two Al Jazeera colleagues.

His parents, Lois and Juris Greste, made the trip to Egypt for the hearing.

Greste was working for the satellite TV network when he was detained a year ago accused of aiding the banned "terrorist group" the Muslim Brotherhood.

Greste was found guilty and sentenced to seven years in jail.

Egypt's Court of Cassation could throw out the conviction, order a retrial or uphold the original guilty verdict.
