New app targets cannabis addiction

A NEW smartphone app to help cannabis addicts quit using the drug has been launched.

The National Cannabis Prevention and Information Centre launched Joint Effort Quit to help users connect with others who struggle with cannabis addiction.

Senior NCPIC researcher, Dr Peter Gates said it was important to understand the addictive nature of cannabis and how challenging it could be to quit.

"Some people say cannabis is a harmless herb and disregard the potential for dependence and withdrawal," Dr Gates said.

"But for at least 200,000 Australians, cannabis addiction is a very real issue, and these kinds of attitudes belittle and stigmatise the challenges faced by some people when trying to quit the drug for good.

"As with any addiction, it's the withdrawals that can be the hardest hurdle to overcome. People often feel very strong cravings when they quit, particularly around the time of day they would usually be lighting up a joint or a bong."

Dr Gates said it was exciting to have an "accessible solution" to tackle cannabis addiction.

"This app is the first of its kind for cannabis," he said.

"It provides Australians with support and a game plan that is tailor-made just for them."

The Joint Effort app, launched on Tuesday, can be downloaded for free for iPhone and Android.
