New big names for Supanova line-up
WITH just over two months until the Gold Coast event, it's a good time for Supanova fans to be getting their tickets - and their costumes - sorted.
The pop culture expo's most recent announcement contains an exciting mix of panache, verve, strength and style.
The big names on the bill include muscle-man Dolph Lundgren, of Rocky IV, Masters of the Universe and Universal Soldier; actor Manu Bennett, of the Hobbit trilogy and TV series Arrow; and voice actor Robbie Daymond, of the new English-dubbed Sailor Moon series.
These "Supa Stars" join a handful of others already announced, including Star Trek's George Takei, Ryan Hurt of Sons of Anarchy, James Cosmo of Game of Thrones, Georgina Hair of One Upon a Time, and more.
Supanova Pop Culture Expo started in Sydney in 2002 as a home-grown Australian event to showcase sci-fi, fantasy, comic books, anime, manga, games, cosplay and more.
The event now visits six cities and is billed as the largest of its kind in Australia, with more than 192,000 fans attending its expos last year.
Last year, the Gold Coast event was hailed a great success, with more than 30,000 people turning out over three days.
That was thousands up from the year before, according to director Daniel Zachariou.
"It's just great to see so many fans having fun," Mr Zachariou said.
"It's a beautiful thing that you can express yourself and your love of popular culture in this way."
Mr Zachariou said with many fans spending long hours on their costumes, it was no surprise many got into character for the weekend.
He said organisers felt welcome on the Gold Coast; they've committed to running the event at this location until at least 2020.
This will be Supanova's fourth year on the Gold Coast.
Supanova will visit Melbourne on April 11 and 12, before making its way to the Gold Coast Convention and Exhibition Centre on April 18 and 19.
