New deal secures future at Snapper
THE annual multi-million dollar investment in the southern Gold Coast and Tweed economies from the Quiksilver Pro surfing contest is set to continue for another nine years.
Global surfwear company Quiksilver has agreed to a new sponsorship deal with the Association of Surfing Professionals for the first event on surfing's World Championship Tour, kicking off today at Snapper Rocks.
The new deal, similar to Quiksilver's previous nine-year contract worth $18 million, means the surf label will spend $2 million a year to run and promote the event which employs around 300 people - nearly all of whom are Gold Coast and Tweed locals.
Contest director Rod Brooks told the Tweed Daily News a $10 million estimate of the value of the “Quiky Pro” to the Gold Coast and Tweed economies, contained in a Gold Coast City Council recent economic impact assessment, probably underestimated the total value of the event.
“There's so much money that filters through, right down to the smallest business, surf shops, board makers, food outlets and, of course, accommodation providers, car hiring and entertainment, I'd say $10 million is conservative,” Mr Brooks said.
Quiksilver contracts Surfing Queensland to co-ordinate the contest, with on-site jobs including scaffolding and catering.
Mr Brooks said the annual payment from Quiksilver to Surfing Queensland, which administers local and regional surfing contests and licenses surf schools, was a major source of revenue for the state organisation.
Meanwhile, the Gold Coast will be promoted in 47 Quiksilver and Roxy store outlets across Asia throughout March and April in a promotional campaign with Gold Coast Tourism estimated to reach 80,000-plus consumers.
As part of the promotion, 18 journalists from China, Taiwan and Hong Kong will be at the contest site, providing coverage of the event for more than three million people in Asia.
