New Dumb and Dumber worst film of 2014?

Some things are best left in the past.

Just like scrunchies, Hammerpants and Jason Priestley's hair, the Dumb and Dumber franchise should really have been left to die in the 90s.

Twenty years ago, the original film was a runaway hit - cementing Jim Carrey's place as a comedy superstar.   But if there's a buck to be made rehashing an old idea, Hollywood will be there ready to collect.

And so we have Dumb and Dumber To (a deliberately dumb title given the film is the third in the franchise) descending on the world's cinema screens.

Predictably, it's met with universally abysmal reviews and become an instant frontrunner for next year's Razzie Awards.   Here's just a sample of the bile being spewed at the Farrelly brothers latest comedic effort.

Lindsey Bahr, Associated Press

"What may have been subversive and irreverent in 1994, now just seems vulgar, hateful and tone-deaf - from their unabashedly misogynistic treatment of women (including Kathleen Turner as Penny's mom) to their insidious racism. In the harsh light of 2014, their juvenile buffoonery looks embarrassing and lazy. It's hard to imagine a new generation latching on to this brand of humor."

  David Edelstein, Vulture

"I reckon four out of every five jokes played to silence at the preview screening. If Dumb and Dumber To were a live comedian, he'd have said, "Is this an audience or an oil painting?" He'd have left the stage in tears."

Mick LaSalle, San Francisco Chronicle

"Is this worse for Jim Carrey or Jeff Daniels? That's the sort of question that comes to mind while not laughing at Dumb and Dumber To. Either out of nostalgia, or a sense of loyalty, or some epic misreading of the script, or a payday beyond the dreams of most mere mortals, Carrey and Daniels agreed to appear in this ghastly sequel, which is more than just not funny. "King Lear" isn't funny. This is anti-funny, where every attempt at a joke is like a little rock thrown at your face."

Claudia Puig, USA Today

Daniels and Carrey give it their all, as does most of the aging cast. And there's something oddly brave about that. And pathetic. Apparently, outrageously crassness knows no age limits.

Sure, this nearly two-hour bathroom joke is aimed at 11-year-old boys, but that's no excuse for these sloppy seconds.

Jason Clark, Entertainment Weekly

"The material feels more desperate than funny... Carrey and Daniels are forced to wring this middling material so hard they must have calluses. The ultimate sad realization is not that Dumb & Dumber To doesn't match the original's good-time quotient, but that it might not even be as good as-yikes-Dumb and Dumberer: When Harry Met Lloyd."

 Colin Covert, Minneapolis Star Tribune

"The result is simply stupid. This embarrassing revival plays as if the script were written in Comic Sans."
