New flights open airport to world
QANTAS' return to the Gold Coast will provide opportunities for tourism on the Tweed, according to a tourism expert.
The airline announced plans yesterday to fly three daily flights between the Gold Coast and Sydney starting in October after four years out of the market.
Destination Tweed chief executive officer Bill Tatchell said any increase in passenger capacity at the Gold Coast Airport was good for the Tweed.
"There are the corporates at the front of the plane who might work in Sydney but choose to live and settle in the shire," Mr Tatchell said.
Mr Tatchell said one of the biggest benefits was from the overseas tourists who could seamlessly travel to the Gold Coast.
"From an international perspective you have to look at who Qantas is aligned with," Mr Tatchell said.
"It becomes a seamless process (for international tourists). Suddenly our little airport on the Gold Coast is connected."
He said having the carrier flying to the Gold Coast made the destination more appealing for niche markets around the world that Qantas' partners served.
Gold Coast Airport chief operating officer Paul Donovan said Qantas' re-commencement to the airport has shown the airline's support for the region.
"The business community of the Gold Coast has expressed their desire to see Qantas return to the Gold Coast and we have been working closely with the airline for a positive result," Mr Donovan said.
"Both Gold Coast Airport and Qantas have watched the business market in the region continue to grow with a keen eye and believe the time is right for the airline's return."
The flights announced this week would provide an additional 7000 inbound and outbound seats a week.
