New pill offers period of relief

AUSTRALIAN women will be the first to use a controversial new contraceptive pill which allows for a menstrual period just three times a year.

Produced by drug company Bayer in Germany, Yaz Flex will come in a Clyk digital dispenser that sends out an alarm when a pill is due to be taken or missedIf used regularly, women can restrict their menstrual periods to just once every four months.

The downside? Like other contraceptive pills, side-effects can include, breast tenderness and nausea, but Bayer has also warned Yaz Flex almost doubles the risk of blood clotting.

The new prescription-only pill will be available at pharmacies around the country this week.
