New poll suggests Campbell Newman may not win his own seat

A NEW union-commissioned poll suggests Queensland Premier Campbell Newman could face "electoral oblivion" if he went up against a former Labor minister who has not yet agreed to stand in his electorate.

The Reachtel poll, conducted with 690 residents selected at random on Thursday night, has primary support for him at 36.6% while Kate Jones, who held the Ashgrove seat until the 2012 election, sits at 51.5%.

While there is speculation Ms Jones will run at the 2015 election next March, she has not confirmed her position.

About 30% of respondents rated Mr Newman a "very poor premier" while 24.5% rated him a "very good premier".

Together Union secretary Alex Scott, who released the poll results outside Parliament House on Friday, said the figures showed a "dramatic collapse" in support for Mr Newman in his electorate.

"Well what we have seen in this poll ... is an accurate reflection of the community attitudes," he said.

"Critically Kate Jones is now above 50% of the popular support if she runs for the Labor Party which means that Campbell Newman fundamentally needs to change the direction of this government if they are not going to face electoral oblivion next year.

"What we need to do is make sure the government listens to the community rather than thinking it can spin it sway out of electoral problems.

"This puts the figures in Ashgrove beyond the swing that we saw in Stafford and Redcliffe and unless the Premier changes his behaviour there is absolutely no way he can win the next election."

Mr Newman backed down on a number of key policies after a shocking loss in the Stafford by-election in July and promised to listen to voters.

A spokesman for the Premier responded to the poll with a one-line statement.

"The premier is totally focussed on the LNP's strong plan to fix the mess left by Labor and ensure Queensland has a bright future," it read. - APN NEWSDESK
