New safety barriers for highway

SAFETY barriers are now being installed on the Pacific Motorway between Tugun and Mudgeeraba, says Burleigh MP Christine Smith.

Mrs Smith said the $3 million project would improve guardrail and wire rope safety measures between the Mudgeeraba Interchange (Exit 79) and Stewart Rd Interchange (Exit 95).

"The median safety barrier prevents cross-median crashes and helps to improve safety for all motorists.

"The project also includes shoulder widening in the centre median and will complement existing guardrail and concrete barriers on other sections of the motorway."

Work crews have set up machinery and started installation this week on the southern end of the Gold Coast and will progressively work towards Mudgeeraba.

To avoid peak hour traffic, night works will be carried out for the next six to eight weeks, with some lane closures between 8pm (Qld) and 5am.

Mrs Smith said it was good news Transport and Main Roads would aim to keep disruptions for motorists and nearby residents to a minimum.

"Noisy activities such as driving in the rail posts will be done early in the night and then quieter works will be done for the rest of the night," she said.

"These are essential safety works and I'd like to thank motorists and residents in advance for their patience and understanding while the barriers are being installed."
