Newman supports Dowling despite him doing 'silly things'

SHOWING his support for the LNP MP outed last week as a serial sexter, Premier Campbell Newman suggested "we're all human beings and politicians are no different".

Mr Newman said there was "absolutely no doubt" Redlands MP Peter Dowling, who texted photos of his penis in a glass of wine to his mistress, was doing his job as a parliamentary member.

"He stood up in parliament and made a full apology," he told ABC radio.

"He knows he's done some very, very silly things.

"In relation to allegations about him misusing public money, that was referred to the clerk.

"He stood down from his job (as ethics committee chair).

"I don't condone what he's done, of course, I don't.

"But that's a matter for him and his family."

Mr Newman said Mr Dowling's electorate would have the chance to decide whether he no longer met their standards at the next election.

But he said Mr Dowling had done everything expected of him.

"The issue of standards comes down to this. If someone does the wrong thing in my team, I deal with it, I don't sweep it under the carpet," he said.

"If they have to be investigated, it's investigated, if they have to lose their job, they lose their job.

"I've sacked ministers for not living up to the standards.

"Mr Dowling lost his job because he didn't meet the standard."

Mr Dowling's mistress told News Ltd that she had been living it up on public money and suggested Mr Dowling had misused parliamentary travel privileges.
