No magic for darts wizard Simon Whitlock in world champs

SEVENTH seed Simon Whitlock has suffered a shock first-round defeat at the World Championships in London, beaten 3-1 by England's Darren Webster.

Whitlock (pictured) looked out of sorts and despite the Australian levelling the game at one set-all, Webster powered away to take the next two sets against the 2010 finalist.

There was better news for fellow Aussie Lawrence Ryder, who set up a second-round clash with Englishman Terry Jenkins after upsetting Justin Pipe 3-2.

Ryder fought back from 2-1 down to clinch victory and then won six straight legs to stun the 17th seed.

Jenkins beat another Australian, John Weber, 3-1 in the first round.

Perth's Kyle Anderson, who hit a perfect nine-darter in last year's championships, is also through to round two after a 3-0 win over England's Steve Beaton.

The 27-year-old wrapped up victory with a double five to set up a match against Andy Hamilton.
