No Spanish flair for Aussie duo

AUSTRALIA'S synchronised swimming duet of Eloise Amberger and Sarah Bombell have today finished 23rd in the Free Routine Preliminary at the Olympic Aquatics Centre.

The Queenslanders finished with a score of 77.480 for their Spanish inspired routine which when combined with their technical score from yesterday (77.400) gave them a final result of 154.880, ranking them in 23rd position overall which unfortunately was not enough to see them advance to the finals.

"Our routine today was Spanish based; we tried to make the choreography fast, dynamic and powerful.  A flamenco dancer type feel with some feeling and passion behind it," said Amberger.

"I think we swam really well and we performed to the best of our ability but we are a bit disappointed as we were hoping to get a score closer to eighty.

"The support was incredible, it was a wonderful atmosphere and it was always going to be tough and competitive - this is the Olympics," added Bombell.

Russia (196.800), China (192.810) and Spain (192.590) are the top three nations heading into the final.

Whilst disappointed to have been eliminated from the duet competition, the girls will now turn their focus to the teams' synchro event for preliminaries which begin on Friday against eight of the best synchro teams in the world.
