North Kirra wins surf champs
THE 2013 Australian Surf Life Saving Championships are moving to the southern Gold Coast after the death of a competitor at last year's event.
The titles will permanently move to North Kirra and Tugun after the beach was used as a temporary venue earlier this year when competitor Matthew Barclay died while competing at Kurrawa.
At the time of the temporary move Surf Life Saving Australia said North Kirra was a more protected beach.
According to a SLSA spokesman the event was expected to bring 80,000 people to the southern Gold Coast.
SLSA chief executive officer Brett Williamson said the decision was made following thorough risk assessments of all possible Gold Coast venues and extensive consultation with stakeholders.
"On June 1 2012 a review team consisting of athletes, Australian Surf Rowing League Representatives, prominent coaches, key officials, experienced local surf lifesavers, Gold Coast Lifeguards and SLSA staff met to discuss issues relating to venues and dates for the 2013 Australian Championships," Mr Willliamson said.
"A number of possible Gold Coast-based venues were assessed and from this, it was decided that North Kirra and Tugun were the venues most suitable.
"We are confident that both North Kirra and Tugun will provide the beach, facilities, infrastructure and favourable surf conditions to successfully host the Australian Championships.
"SLSA is grateful for the support and cooperation from both the Gold Coast City Council and Events Queensland in facilitating this change."
The 2013 Australian Surf Life Saving Championships was on April 21-15.
The Gold Coast will also host the 2015, 2017, 2019 and 2020 titles.
