Nurses ranked as most honest, ethical profession

TOOWOOMBA prostate cancer specialist nurse Jo Hiscock isn't surprised nurses are ranked as the most highly regarded profession.

According to Roy Morgan Research, nurses were voted the most ethical and honest profession for the past 22 years.

Australians aged 14 years and over are surveyed each year to determine the list of most ethical jobs.

The 2015 study was released recently with nurses receiving 92%, followed closely by doctors and pharmacists with 86%.

Ms Hiscock said it was nice to be regarded highly.

"A nurse is a very caring profession. You have to be a people's person to do this job," she said.

"It's a privilege to be able to walk alongside your patients and help them while they are very unwell and vulnerable.

"You are trusted because they divulge a lot of information to you and you have to decipher that in the best way you can so you can help them.

"You also give them the power to go home and look after themselves properly."

She believes the reason nurses are ranked as the most ethical profession is because they see people at all stages of life.

"We are there when someone comes into the world and when they go out of the world as well," she said.

"You have to be supportive across an entire lifespan."

Ms Hiscock has some advice for anyone thinking about becoming a nurse.

"If you like to work with people, I would say give it a go," she said.

"It does take a bit of study but it's a very rewarding job.

"But you can't forget to look after yourself. Sometimes you get so wrapped up looking after others you forget about yourself. "
