Obey the Queensland road rules or drive to stay alive?

I was amazed at the near miss caught on video by a concerned truck driver, of another truck driver overtaking, a vehicle towing a caravan and a truck following behind at the end of an overtaking lane, narrowly missing oncoming traffic after swerving over double lines.

I have been operating a driving school in the Rockhampton area for over 10 years and have seen similar incidents like this, happening all the time.

You have got to ask yourself, if a driver decides to overtake you at the end of a merging lane, what sort of mental thought processes are going through his/her head and is he/she fit to have a licence and drive on our roads.

If the vehicles in the left lane are not slowing down, do you think that they are going to suddenly stop at 100 km/hr at the end of the merging lane to allow you to overtake them in the right lane because that is the law?

Traffic signs are in place for drivers to read and understand the oncoming conditions, so if the sign says that the lane will end in 500 metres and requests you to merge right, wouldn't you think that you may have to start looking at merging right, before reaching the end of the lane?

The law states that you should stop at a stop sign or a red light, yet I see people breaking this law nearly every day as well. Don't trust other drivers as not everyone knows the law or obeys the law, so you should drive defensively, avoid getting into a dangerous situation and survive the drive.

There have been so many comments on-line, defending the actions of the overtaking cowboy truck driver, quoting traffic regulations to defend their comments. The whole incident would not have taken place if everyone knew the road rules and if a little patience and common sense was applied by the cowboy truck driver. It is better to be a little late then "dead on time", so I don't defend the actions of the overtaking truck driver and believe that some action needs to take place, before he does it again and ends up in a major accident killing several people.

Maybe our traffic laws need to be amended or maybe more police patrolling our highways needs to occur, which leads me into another question.

Should people be made to do an attitude or an IQ test before being allowed to have a licence?
