Oceans valued at $31 trillion, but under attack

THE world's oceans could be worth as much as $31 trillion, but that value was at risk from an "unrelenting assault" from over-fishing, climate change and development, a new report says.

The review of the economic value of oceans by University of Queensland's Professor Ove Hoegh-Guldberg was released on Thursday.

Prof Hoegh-Guldberg said the ocean's goods and services from fishing to coastal storm protection were at greater risk now than "any other time in recorded history".
