October scorchers a record
IF you woke up sweltering this week, it was for good reason.
Three temperature records were broken in the early hours of last Tuesday.
A Bureau of Meteorology spokesman said at 3am, the Coolangatta automatic weather station recorded a reading of 29.1 degrees - the highest 3am temperature for that site since records began about 25 years ago.
He said the midnight reading of 27.4 degrees - and the milder 6am temperature of 24.8 - were both records for their time during October.
The weather station, located near the Gold Coast Airport, is the closest site of temperature measurement to Tweed Heads.
The warmer temperatures weren't isolated; Murwillumbah reached maximums of 30 degrees or more at least five days this month - four of those on consecutive days this week.
At 4.30am Tuesday, temperatures reached 29.5 degrees, believed to have been Coolangatta's highest temperature between midnight and 6am for October.
The spokesman said a warm west-north-westerly disturbed the overnight cooling and caused temperatures to rise after 10am.
