Offender with plastic gun tries to hold-up cheesecake shop

A WOULD-be thief confronted a staff member of Hervey Bay's Cheesecake Shop about 3pm on Friday.

He entered the store through the back door and demanded money while holding a gun in her face.

Unfortunately for the thief, the staff member saw that the gun he was holding was a black plastic toy.

The woman told the man to leave and he took her advice, making a quick getaway before police arrived.

Fellow staff member Ashleigh Nielsen described the attempted robbery as "ridiculous".

"Why would you want to hold-up a cheesecake shop?" she said.

"If you want cheesecake, just come in and ask for one."

Ms Nielsen said one upside to the robbery was that the police had told them not to clean up the store later that night so they could come back and collect evidence.

"That's a bonus for me," she said wryly.

The offender was described as being Caucasian, about 175cm tall, dressed in black tracksuit pants and a grey hoodie.

The staff member said he was wearing a black mask at the time of the attempted robbery.

Shop owner Debbie Nielsen said she was proud of her staff member for not panicking.
