One dead, another airlifted after head-on crash

A MAN is dead and another has been airlifted to Cairns Base Hospital after a car and ute collided.

The crash at Emerald Creek outside Mareeba in far north Queensland shut the Kennedy Highway for hours.

Police believe two vehicles crashed at 7.25pm on Sunday. Emergency services declared the car's driver dead at the scene.

The male driver of the utility was airlifted to the Cairns Base Hospital with serious but non-life threatening injuries.

The Forensic Crash Unit is investigating.
