Yamba’s iconic surfing retailer on the market
ONE of Yamba's longest operating retailers Fandango Surf Co is up for sale after providing locals and the many visitors to the coastal hamlet with swimwear and surfing products for more than three decades.
Owner Grant Dwyer has decided it is "time to wind down and start to live life" - which of course includes riding a few more waves, promised the veteran surfer of five decades.
The retail shop in Yamba St is the last of the Fandango "empire" which began as a wholesale company designing women's swimwear.
"We had three shops at one stage, a discount outlet, a boutique called Fandango Designs and a surf shop. Now it's just the shop left."
Grant said Fandango began as a cottage industry specialising in women's swimwear well before the likes of Quiksilver and Billabong got into the act.
"We had that niche covered until they came along and smashed us at the time, but we've followed the growth of the industry and kept up with the changes, moving into synthetics and custom boards," said Grant.
"We've come a long way since we started collecting fabrics on our travels to begin the business."
Grant said he had received a few inquiries since he listed the shop for sale around Christmas, but wasn't getting too far ahead of himself yet.
"These days anyone can own a surf shop. You don't really need experience on a board to stand behind the counter," he said.
"It's useless thinking my 50-plus years as a surfer doesn't mean much any more.
"The most important thing to surfers (male and female) today is whether their wetsuit matches their board.
"A sport of function is now more about how good I look," he said.
