O'Rafferty secures chance at Pro

KIRRA Boardriders member Darren O’Rafferty is a step closer to setting up a showdown with the surfing world’s elite.

O’Rafferty won the Trials for Trials event at Southport on Saturday to secure his place in the qualifying event for the Quiksilver Pro, the opening event of the 2010 world championship tour.

The winner of the qualifying event will earn a place in the main draw of the Quiksilver Pro to be staged at Snapper Rocks from February 27.

O’Rafferty dominated Saturday’s final in one-metre waves at the Spit, finishing with a two-wave total of 16.93 (out of a possible 20).

Coolangatta’s Blake Ainsworth finished second to cement his place in the qualifying event while Luke Dorrington and Corey Ziems finished third and fourth respectively.

In the women’s event, Sunshine Coaster Dimity Stoyle edged out Tugun’s Bridey McNeven, Angie Coops of Palm Beach and Tiani McNeven to secure the only berth available in the qualifying event for the Roxy Pro.

The Quiksilver and Roxy Pro trials are scheduled to be held on February 26.
